MALTA MOBILITY
MONDAY 25TH NOVEMBER TO FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019
THEME OF MOBILITY: HISTORY & POLITICS
Most of the participants, who came from 5 different countries, namely, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Greece and Romania, arrived in Malta on Sunday 24th November, and were accommodated at the Rivotorto hostel in Birkirkara.
First day: Monday 25th, the group was picked up by coach at about 08:30 and taken to ALP Paola were they were ushered into the hall. When everybody had settled down the head of school made the opening speech and wished everybody a fruitful and nice stay in Malta. After the speech each country had time to make a presentation about the historical sites one can find in their country. These short presentations were very interesting and at the same time were also a very good start to the mobility.
After a coffee break the students had their first activity, which was painting of pebbles and tin butterflies, while the teachers had a tour around the school. The teachers also had a TPM session. The topics discussed were, our next Ltt meeting in Romania, the final report and other pending issues. David, the overall coordinator chaired the meeting. Everybody had lunch at school.
After lunch, we were taken on a bus tour and were supposed to have a stroll in Sliema, but due to bad weather this was cancelled. In the evening we had dinner in a restaurant in Sliema. After wards everybody returned to the hostel.
Second day: Tuesday 26th, the group was picked up by coach from the hostel early and dropped off at Cirkewwa to catch the ferry to cross to the sister island of Gozo. As soon as we arrived in Gozo there were two minivans waiting for us to take us for our first activity of the day. This was visiting the Neolithic temples of Ggantija, some claim that this is the most ancient free standing building in the world. We had a guided tour of the place and the participants put several questions to the person leading the tour. After this visit we went to Marsalform for lunch and then went to visit the Cittadella, which is like a fortified medieval city. After spending some time there we were taken to the ferry boat to return to Malta. The coach was waiting for us and took us to the hostel.
Third day: Wednesday 27th, we had another hectic day after being picked up the group was taken to Valletta, the Capital city of Malta. First we went o the upper Barracca to have a look at the beautiful Grand Harbour from this vantage point. Afterwards we left on foot to the houses of parliament, where we had a meeting with the Speaker of the house of representatives. We were shown around and afterwards we were seated in the strangers gallery overlooking the chamber of representatives. While being their we were joined by the Honourable speaker who get us a short history of the Maltese parliament and how does the parliament function. The group had time to ask questions, which they did. Later I was informed that the speaker was impressed by the interest shown.
After the parliament we had another meeting, this time at the education department, where we met with the general director of education. After a short speech most about how the educational system works and also an emphasis about the huge number of foreign students we have in our schools. Everybody had time to ask questions. We had lunch and later we went to watch a 3D presentation about the history of Malta, called The Malta Experience.
Later we went by coach to a fishing village called Marsaxlokk and after a short walk we had dinner and later everybody returned to the hostel.
Forth day Thursday 28th. In the morning we went again to Valletta. This time we visited the armoury of the Grand Palace. This Palace was the headquarters of the Knights of Malta. There we had the opportunity of seeing some of the weapons, some of which are very rear, that were used by the knights when they went to battle. Again we had a official person who showed us around. Afterwards we went to see probably the most beautiful church in Europe. Saint John Co-Cathedral was the most important church in the time of the knights where the most important religious ceremonies where held. They still are to this very day.
Later , we when on foot to a place called EASO. This is a European Agency which deals with refugees. There we had a introductory speech and then some activities were organised. We were divided into four groups and each group had a topic to deal with. The participants especially the students took active part in these workshops.
After this activity we went by coach to the old Capital City of Malta, Mdina. The group was divided again into four groups and each group had a set of questions to find hidden clues inside the old capital. The students just loved this and each group worked hard to finish this treasure hunt first. We had dinner in the vicinity and during the dinner the group that won the treasure hunt was given certificates. The Romanian team were also given the certificate of participation of the mobility because they were leaving early the following morning.
Fith day: Friday 29th. The last day. The Romanian team left to the airport early to catch a flight back home. The rest of the group left the hostel at about 09:00 and went to visit other Neolithic temples this time in Malta Again a tour was conducted and we were shown around. We spent some time there and then we went to Wied Iz-Zurrieq, to admire the panorama. After an hour or so we returned to the hostel and had had some free time to relax. At around six in the afternoon the group was picked up again to go to a restaurant where we had the farewell dinner, the certificates were also distributed. And so end this interesting mobility full of activities.
On Saturday all but the Greek team left for home, then on Sunday it was the turn of the Greek team to return home as well.
So ends the Malta mobility, I’m sure that every single one of the participants took something with them, something that they will remember for a long time. Even us Maltese enjoyed the week and have very nice memories that we passed with our foreign friends. Now we are looking forward to meet them again for the 6th and last mobility which will be taking place in Romania. From the survey conducted by the coordinator it resulted that everyone had a good time.
The most important thing is that the themes of the project where properly covered.
With these type of mobilities, it is nice to see them arrive but it is not so nice to see them go.
